non-pathogenic E. coli strains DH10B and BL21
wild-type Drosophila melanogaster

Lab work
Malathion is not toxic to people at low to moderate doses, but it was pipetted in a fume hood by students wearing personal protective equipment.
All students passed university Chemical Safety and Laboratory Safety courses.

Environment
Bacteria could be used as vector for recombinant detoxifying enzymes.
Recombinant E. coli unlikely to survive in the wild.
