2018 Safety and Security Status

It is a requirement for participation in iGEM that all teams comply with the Safety and Security Rules and the Safety and Security Policies. Failure to meet any of these requirements can lead to immediate disqualification from the competition and referral to the Responsible Conduct Committee. Full details and additional information can be found on the Safety and Security Hub.

About safety and security forms

All iGEM teams must identify any potential risks to the team, their colleagues, communities and the environment from their projects. All teams must also describe the procedures, practices and other measures taken to manage these risks. Teams tell iGEM about the risks and how they are managing them through three forms:

Safety and Security form

This describes risks and risk management. A draft must be completed by the team by June 29, 2018, and a final version must be submitted by the PI by September 7, 2018.

Check-In form

This provides more detailed information on potential risks and risk management for organisms or parts not on the White List. A separate Check-In form is required for each organism or part. There is no specific deadline for a Check-In form but they must be submitted and approved by the Safety and Security Committee before these parts or organisms are used.

Animal Use form

This justifies why a team needs to use vertebrates (e.g. rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters), or higher order invertebrates (e.g. cuttlefish, octopus, squid, lobster). This justification must comply with the Animal Use Policy. A separate Animal Use form is required for each animal. There is no specific deadline for an Animal Use form but they must be submitted and approved by the Safety and Security Committee before these parts or organisms are used.

About safety and security status

Cleared

(only for overall safety and security status)
All team need to be cleared before they can participate in the Giant Jamboree. The decision to clear a team is taken based upon a review of the final Safety and Security form submitted by the PI, any submitted Check-In forms, or Animal Use forms, as well as any information on the wiki, correspondence with the team, or other information that helps determine that a team is complying with the Safety and Security Rules and Safety and Security Policies.

No current issues

(only for overall safety and security status)
most teams should see this status most of the year. It means that there are no pressing safety or security issues with your project and you are in good standing with our rules and policies.

With Safety and Security Committee

Some element of the project is under discussion by the committee. This might be one of the forms you submitted or some other element of the project (such as information on your wiki). If you have not heard from the Safety and Security Committee within 48 hours of seeing this status, please contact safety [at] igem.org

With reviewers

At least one of the forms you have submitted is with one of our reviewers. This is a normal part of iGEM’s safety and security screening. When you see this status you know we are making use of the information you provided. We attempt to ensure that forms are reviewed within a week. Sometimes delays are unavoidable. If you are concerned about the length of time a form is being reviewed please contact safety [at] igem.org

Non-compliant

This means that you have failed to meet one of iGEM’s Safety and Security Rules or Safety and Security Policies. The most common reason for being Non-compliant is having missed a deadline for the Safety and Security form. The Safety and Security Committee will follow up on all non-compliance. In most cases it is possible to take action to become compliant once again (for example by submitting the Safety and Security form if you missed the deadline). If you have not heard from the Safety and Security Committee within 48 hours of seeing this status, please contact safety [at] igem.org

Approved

(only for individual forms)
– this means the form has been reviewed and the Safety and Security Committee is happy for you to use the associated part or organism (for a Check-In form) or animal (for an Animal Use form). It will only appear for the Safety and Security form after the final deadline towards the end of your project.

In progress

(only for individual forms)
This means that you have begun work on a form but have yet to submit it. You will see this status for your Safety and Security form for most of the year as it should only be submitted towards the end of your project.

Submitted

(only for individual forms)
This means the form has been passed to the Safety and Security Committee and is awaiting review. Check-In forms or Animal Use forms must be submitted before they can be reviewed. The Safety and Security form is only submitted by your PI towards the end of your project.
