Participants: elementary school students
Date: Oct. 9, 2018
Location: Chiao-Jen elementary school, Taichung
Perspective: biotech scientists
Why: To promote iGEM activities and symbiotic biology to the elementary students.
How: We went to Chiao-Jen Elementary School and held a workshop about genetic engineering. We talked about GMO issues and biotech application.
What:
Our team members introduced basic symbiotic biology and some of existing moral concerns to them. Later on, we presented our iGEM project in a simplified way to describe how synthetic biology works. Elementary school kids were interested in our project, we could see sparkles in their eyes with enthusiasm and curiosity. Last, we asked about their opinions on our project. We could clearly see that most of the children are scared of using syringe. Instead, they prefer to use our genetically modified mosquitoes as an alternative.
Reflection:
According to the view from the elementary school kids, we learned about their interest and highly support on our project. They think it's really useful and convenient and would like to try when the product is sold on the market. In addition, the workshop also let us know how much they understand about biology as well as genetic engineering technology.
