The presence of estrogens in water bodies is increasing. These compounds are endocrine disrupters biologically active even in small concentrations. They can be especially toxic to fish and cause long term harmful effectes in humans and other animals. Due to the lack of effective treatment in effluents for the removal of these micropollutants, contaminated waters continuously return to the environment. Our team's proposal is to create a method for degradation of estrogens from water. We intend to use genetically engenireed laccase enzymes from fungi to remove this microcontaminants from sewage. Our final plan is to simulate a real apliccation of this biodegration system in effluent and water treatement stations. In the end, our goal is to clean our water!

Origin of Hormones

What degradates Hormones

Hormones launched into sources of water, such as river, are degraded by bacterial, adsorption or photolytic activities, howerever this process have been reported to take days no ambientes otimizado do laboratório. Normally this would not present a problem since its natural concentration is low, but as humans continue to consume and jogar fora estes elementos químicos o método natural demonstra ser ineficiente.

What will we do?

Our mission is to use the lacase enzyme to degrade the hormones before they reach natural waters, seeing that o esgoto ja é tratato by ETE, wich also eliminates undesirable microorganism, we propose inserting a microorganism adaptable to esgoto water conditions and capable of producing the lacase enzyme. For that we need to seek for a robust microorganismo capable of surviving a hightly competitive enviroment and maleable enought so we can adjust a modelagem pre estabelecida.
