MOD - University of Auckland iGEM 2018 Team

Entrepreneurship

Baha'i people believe that “The knowledge of sciences should be acquired as can profit the peoples of the earth, and not those which begin with words and end with words.” Team MOD's interpretation is that we ought to maximise our societal benefit by commercialising research in way that is accessible to the many. All members of Team MOD are young scientists, and all members take part in the entrepreneurial process below.

Team MOD's approach

Our iGEM project conception process always starts with investigating real world problems including: bee colony collapse disorder due to neonicotinoid insecticide and parasitic mites called Varroa destructor; automation restrictions in aeroponic growing systems due to nutrients forming crystals and blocking the misting nozzles; massive crop and pasture yield losses due to the increasing threat of drought in areas affected by climate change; and river pollution and biodiversity loss due to fertiliser use, nitrogen leaching and algal bloom.

After learning that most New Zealand farmers and councils are actively trying to reduce pollution1, and that we could also reduce fertiliser costs with our plant solution, we knew that there was a solid business case to be made. With the help of experts from Return On Science, one of New Zealand’s top research commercialisation programmes, we refined our business model.
