MOD - University of Auckland iGEM 2018 Team

Hadleigh Waldegrave

Team lead

I live and breathe Biotech, Marketing and Computer Science. For last year's frost-resistant plant project, I provided market research and advice for the research commercialisation process. I have a commercial interest in genetic engineering and aeroponics technology, which has been complemented by our team projects. All decisions have been made with a particular goal in mind: to fully establish a genetics group around the University of Auckland which can more easily compete in iGEM every year. As such, we're much more ready to provide future MOD teams with connections, finances, digital assets and a dedicated support group of iGEM alumni. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank everybody involved. I wish future MOD teams the best of luck for what has been the biggest academic challenge of my life. What a way to make awesome friends and finish my BCom/BSc conjoint!

Fascinated by people! Fascinated by their train of thought, the way they work, and what sparks their curiosity. For me, this year with iGEM has been a lesson in empowering my curiosity with action - I'm always learning about new fields coming out of biotech, but being able explore these interests myself everyday in the lab, and then sharing this with other students is completely new to me and such a privilege. I can't wait to see what other teams are doing in their own projects! Right now I'm super into epigenetics, astrobiology, and structural virology. If I'm not in the lab you'll find me sipping on wine (microbial fermentation anyone?), fawning over dorky science stuff, or rolling my eyes at Hadleigh's dad jokes. Sometimes, I can even do all three at once.

"Competing in iGEM required more strength, endurance, and sacrifice than any other project I have undertaken. But nothing could have prepared me more for the post graduate study I am now pursuing than formulating and completing our project as an independent scienctist."
