Abstract
In Mexico there is a great percentage of people that cannot afford the treatment of second-degree burns. These types of injuries are the third cause of infant mortality in our country, this is an important issue that needs to be solved. This project approaches that problem with the design of a multi-glycopeptide scaffold and the recombinant growth factor Leptin B to induce fibroblast proliferation. Nanoencapsulation was employed to ensure proper delivery and distribution. Growth measurements were evaluated through cell image analysis and lactate dehydrogenase activity as an indirect indicator, obtained from the culture medium in the MiniSkin Simulator, which is a hardware to test molecules in a 3D culture. This system could enhance tissue regeneration, minimizing infection risks and treatment lapses for affected patients with second-degree burns.
Why
Skin burn care treatments carry several consequences to anyone who suffers from them, ranging from psychological to economic problems or even death, which awoke our team's interest in this situation. Most severe skin burn cases in Mexico are too expensive for the majority of the population, because of the lack of personal and/or technology available in local hospitals to attend these injuries, which causes the need of attendance in a region with these services, elonging the time to attend cases of high emergency and increasing the cost of the treatment. The main purpose of our project is to soften the physiological and economic results derived from skin burns.
