Participants: club members and iGEMers
Date: May 29, 2018
Location: Hungdao Library at Mingdao High School
Dialogue: GMO issues
Why: Mingdao Voice Club is a place where people can sit down and communicate to each other casually, where people can share their different ideas and unique perspective on their view to see the world.
How: It’s Mingdao iGEM’s turn this time. We brought some ethical problems of synthetic biology as well as a short briefing of our project to the Club.
What:
We introduced our big plan of helping people far away from Africa, aiding them to detect HIV promptly and integrate health care system more thoroughly. The Club member gave us feedbacks passionately and suggestions like the safety of GM mosquitoes as well as drones may be quite expensive. We even discussed the ethical issue of Eugenics. We understand that Eugenics can be really controversial. We opened our mind and shared ideas to each other.
Reflection:
We could sit side by side for connecting with people and knowing what they thought. Using GM mosquitoes might remain some ethical problems. But to solve the problem in some poor resource areas, GM mosquitoes for blood testing may be an irreplaceable alternative.
