The Engineering Team

Sandra Castillo: Sandra
Sandra is studying Biomedical Engineering. She plans on attending graduate school once she gets her Bachelor's Degree. Fun Fact about Sandra: In the Summer of 2017, she spent five weeks in Nicaragua, repairing two suspended bridges.
Sean Sean Ryan:
Sean is the President of this year's iGEM Team. He is a third-year undergraduate, majoring in Biomedical Engineering and minoring in Computer Science. After achieving his Bachelor's Degree, he plans to apply and attend graduate school in a Bioengineering program. Fun Fact about Sean: He is apart of an engineering fraternity here at Iowa.
Dr. Sander: Edward
Dr. Edward Sander is a professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa. He received his PhD from Tulane University. His research includes human tissue engineering and how wounds heal.



The Biology Team

Eleanor Eleanor Bessner:
Eleanor recently transferred from Indiana. She is majoring in Genetic and Biotechnology. After getting her Bachelor's Degree, she wants to attend graduate school for genetics or medical school.
Jennifer Farrell: Jennifer
Jenny is a Genetics and Biotechnology undergraduate student. After getting her Bachelor's Degree, she plans on going on to Dental School. Fun Fact about Jenny: She has competed in the World Cigar Smoking Championship in Split, Croatia.
Yishuo Yishuo Jiang:
Yishuo is a Junior undergraduate student, majoring in Biology. His interest in iGEM began through his experience as an undergraduate reseach assistant in Dr. Fassler's lab and became motivated to learn more about critical thinking in data analysis and honing in various experimental protocols. After graduation, he has a strong passion to pursue graduate school and earn a PhD in biomedical sciences.
Rafael Linares: Rafael
Rafael is a Junior undergraduate student, majoring in Biochemistry. He became involved in iGEM through an insterest better understand the pathways underlying the biosensors that modulate the concentration of 3-HP.
Delaney Delaney Soule:
Delaney is a fourth-year undergraduate student at Iowa. She is a Genetics and Biotechnology and Medical Anthropology major. She plans on attending graduate school for genetics after getting her Bachelor's Degree. She hopes to attend a school on the West Coast. Fun Fact about Delaney: In the summer of 2017, she went on an archaeology dig and found lots of bones and ceramic.
Shao Yang Zhang: Shao
Shao is a Biomedical Engineering undergraduate student. After getting his Bachelor's Degree, Shao is interested in attending Dental School and utilizing background knowledge to pursue a career in academia.
Shao Dr. Fassler:
Dr. Jan Fassler is a professor of Biology at the University of Iowa. She received her PhD from Purdue University. Her research includes using full genome sequencing to find out what genes have been lost over time in animals.



The Microbiology Team

Katie Katie Amick:
Katie is a fourth-year undergraduate student at Iowa. She is majoring in biology. She hopes to attend graduate school and study pathology. Fun Fact about Katie: She is a member of the Iowa karate club.
Brynn Kyleakin Helm: Brynn
Kyleakin is a third-year undergraduate student, majoring in Genetics and Biotechnology. She is also minoring in Microbiology. She plans on attending graduate school and then hopes to be in research. Fun Fact about Kyleakin: She is a fourth degree black belt in Taekwondo.
Craig Dr. Ellermeier:
Dr. Craig Ellermeier is a professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois. His research includes how Gram-positive bacteria respond and react to extracellular signals.



The Biochemistry Team

Joe Davis: Joe
Joe is a third-year undergraduate student from. He is the only chemistry major on this year's iGEM team. After achieving his Bachelor's Degree, he will be attending graduate school. Fun Fact about Joe: Joe is growing his luscious hair to donate to kids with alopecia.
Jianwei Jianwei Hu:
Jianwei is an international student all the way from China. He is studying Biomedical Engineering here at Iowa. He plans to attend graduate school after graduating with his Bachelor's Degree. Fun Fact about Jianwei: He enjoys playing the online multiplayer video game, Defense of the Ancients.
Dr. Fuentes: Ernesto
Dr. Ernesto Fuentes is a professor of Biochemistry at the University of Iowa. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois. His research includes important issues in human health signal transduction.
