OVERVIEW

This year, we proposed a quick and easy platform to determine the effectiveness of hair loss product without animal or human testing by evaluating a critical protein, DKK1, of the hair regeneration pathway. We are aware of the fact that all biological experiments could pose some risk to the environment and experimenter, and should only proceed under well regulation. We strictly follow a high standard of biosafety and responsible biological engineering of the guideline from iGEM Headquarter.
BIOSAFETY

The chassis we used in the project include Escherichia coli, Human cell line HEK293 and Dermal papilla.
Escherichia coli
We used Escherichia coli DH5alpha and BL21 in our project. Both of them are BSL-1 organism. Although the E. coli strains we use pose little or no risk of pathogenic, there's still risk of causing skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritation. To prevent these, everyone in wet-lab are required to wear full personal protection gear properly when operating with E. coli competent cells and cultures. All materials that came in contact with bacterial cultures or competent cells were autoclaved and disposed properly.
Human cell line
The cell line we used, HEK293, is BSL-1 organism, and dermal papilla, belong to BSL-2. All the experiments with human cell line are done in another BSL-2 cell culture room under the supervision of our instructor. All materials that came in contact with human cell lines were autoclaved and disposed of properly.

Training
To conduct experiments properly and safely, all of the team member should go through lab safety lesson and lab training directed by our instructors and member from 2017 NYMU_Taipei iGEM team.
Safe Lab Work
All experiments are done in proper condition considering its Biosafety Level and we strictly follow the Laboratory Safe Hygiene Precautions of our school. All team members participate in lab work wear personal protection equipment such as but not limited to lab coat, rubber gloves, long pants, and shoes of full coverage. All experimental procedure were checked and supervised by our instructor before we conducted, and Lab notes were record right after the experiment.
Waste Treatment
We gather chemical and bacteria mixture into a bottle containing bleach after conducting the experiments, and sterilize all trash with autoclave and discard it at a specific area of contaminative trash. All of these strictly follow the Biological waste treatment process of Center of Environmental Protection and Safety and Health in our school.
We strictly ensured the implementation of all of these methods to prevent accidents, contamination and the spread of possible pathogens.
