PHB is an environmental-friendly biomaterial.

PHB(polyhydroxy butyrate), known as bioplastic, is of great use in many fields such as medical care, and can be degraded by proteobacteria without contaminating the environment. PHB can be produced by genetically modified microorganism through fermentation.

Light is an ideal switch.

Optogenetics can control a specific function of a cell when sensing the existence of light. It is much better than chemical inducers because of its stability and convenient operations.

If we bind these two together…

We can use light to control the production of PHB as well as other valuable products in our genetically engineered Escherichia coli with typeⅠ CRISPRi. Thus we can reduce manual manipulation in industrial fermentation.
