- Integrated human practices as a beekeeper and agronomist have each told us about pests that eat the aphids, and informed us that bees eat secreted honeydew.
- Codon optimised mCherry for plants, making it compatible for GoldenGate cloning. This is useful as eGFP excites at a similar wavelength to green leaves, whereas mCherry has an excitation wavelength in the red region of visible light, and is therefore favourable for plants.
- Extensive field and lab models to predict how the siRNAs could control aphid populations. These have various scenarios depending on factors such as siRNA toxicity, aphid birth and death rates, and migration of healthy aphids in the field.
- Successfully expanded the PhytoBrick registry with useful reporter genes. Helped to characterise expression of some existing parts, including terminator and promoter elements.
Silver
- Added a high quality functional part (GUS)
- Collaborated with several teams, but most notably with WashU
- Extensive communication with stakeholders such as farmers and beekeepers. Communication with the public and outreach events with all ages.
Bronze
- Deliverables
- Attend
- Interlab AND characterized long 35S promoter
