As a team, one of our favourite parts in iGEM have been collaborations. They reminded us that iGEM is not only a competition but a chance to share and let other teams be a part of your project, and that is wonderful. Below is shown the different universities that have collaborated with us. By clicking in the index or in the images you can go directly to the explanation.

Synthetic Biology achievements and challenges have only real sense taking into account the effect it has on the improvement of nowadays issues. However, it is also one of the most controversial scientific fields for the public opinion.

Generally, the presence of misconceptions in regard to genetic engineering makes it difficult to reach to the general public . Moreover, access to SynBio is currently hampered by several barriers, such as the extensive background knowledge.

+

Thus, with Printeria we want to break the social and technological barriers that prevent people from coming into Synthetic Biology. In this context, our Education and Public Engagement work has the aim of divulgating SynBio through different social targets, so that misinformation is beated in favour of the critical thinking.

When explaining Printeria to people, we see they are reticent to use it because of the genetically modified bacteria that we do. A part of our project is to fight the stigma against Synthetic Biology and Harvard was claiming for teams disposed to do so.

Collaboration

Their collaboration was about doing a report of your project and create a series of newsletters and articles to show how we are using bacteria and demonstrate that we are doing it taking into account demanding security measures. However, throughout the summer they changed their mind and now they are doing a magazine instead of a series of articles. They will distribute it in their university and of course in the Giant Jamboree. You can download our report and the magazine by clicking in the buttons below.

Bio Art

Ecuador iGEM team has been working on the development of a new biomaterial to speed up the healing in bone injures. This biomaterial called (C-lastine), is based on the cross-linking of bacterial cellulose and Elastin-like polypeptides. This cross-linking is mediated by a carbohydrate binding domain and a BMP2 protein (an osteoblasts differentiation inducer). To achieve this objective they are using E.Coli as a biofactory, specifically C41 strain which is resistant to Cellulose synthase operon protein D, codified by gene bcsD and responsible of pore formation in the membrane allowing cellulose to exit the cell. The final result is a bandage matrix that can be applied to the wound during a surgical intervention.

Collaboration

+

If we think about it, Printeria is a kind of biofactory so, we thought that trying to make Ecuadorís biomaterial in Printeria would be a good trial to show that Printeria is ready to become something greater in the biotechnological industry and why not, it could be used in hospitals as well. However, due to the fact that there were problems with the size of the parts for Golden Gate and with the customs, it could not become a reality. This idea would be developed with Imperial College. Instead, we did several things.

+
“To develop a complete mind: Study the science of art; Study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else.

We did a survey to get some feedback from the potential users of both projects. It consisted in a video in spanish and then a survey to fill out. In our case, the survey was made to know what users thought about Printeria and Synthetic Biology. In no case this survey represents the collective of users (only 15 people were surveyed) it was just made to have an idea.

Activity: Bioartists for one day

+

How to attract people to SynBio? It is possible to achieve this challenge in a subjective and eye-appealing way? We thought it could be possible, so we designed the didactic practical session ‘Bioartist for one day’.
+

+

The activity took place in the Mustang Art Gallery (Elche), a cultural space dedicated to the diffusion of contemporary art. This workshop involved last year high school students of arts, science and social sciences, so we could interact with a wide range of different profiles.

+

In this activity, they created their own ‘living masterpice’. Previously, we did detailed explanation on how to properly use the lab material and cells during simple microbiology protocols such as plating.
+

+

+

+
Then, using solid agar plates as a canvas, inoculating loops as brushes and a palette of pigmented bacteria we self-made in the lab as tempera, they blew their minds to do imaginative Microbial Art. As soon as they finished, petri dishes were collected, kept and sealed for a later incubation in our lab. Finally, a gallery of all their artistic works was published in this Instagram account, so everyone could share it and so create interest into bacterial art.

+

We also thought that, in the network era, students could be a great help in the promotion of SynBio by simple talking about their experiences, so we created the Instagram hashtag #MAGPRINTERIA to encourage them to share their own pics and impressions during the activity.

Furthermore we provide them with a special strain called C41. This was really important for them due to the fact that without it, they could not continue with their iGEM project.

José María Yturralde is an spanish artist widely known for his relationship with science. He collaborated with artists and scientists to expand and redefine his understanding of shapes, and explored ways that the mainframe computer could be used as a tool for complementing his art practices (2). In this context, we thought it could be a great idea to introduce him to the vast possibilities of the BioArt world.
+

We decided to recreate one of his most famous masterpieces with our own genetic engineered bacteria. To do so, we used a 3D printing mold to delimitate the barriers of the drawing, so we could inoculate each coloured bacteria in a compartiment of the solid agar medium. By this way, we were able to recreate the final artwork perfectly.

Do you know that there is something that grows faster than a Bacteria? If it grows faster...why not use it as a chassis to do pharmaceuticals and chemicals in the industry? This is the fantastic idea that Marburg team has developed. They want to demonstrate that working with V.Natriegens is cheaper, faster and possible with todays methods.

+

Collaboration

+

High school students are eager to know more about the world they live in. However, students rarely learn about Synthetic Biology inside classrooms. As there is a lack of hand-on STEM curricula, basic concepts such as gene, DNA and bacteria are only explained theoretically.

Initially, they requested us to do the interlab study with V.natriegens and to annotate how fast V.natriegens grows but this gave us a really good idea. Why don't we try to use V.natriegens in Printeria? If all goes well, it would mean that Printeria is ready to work with other organisms which grow faster than E.coli, this way we reinforce the biofactory idea of Printeria.

+

However, as things do not go as we spect in certain moments we could not make the interlab with V.natriegens. (Aunque) Marburg team gave us almost all the elements to do it we had to buy V.natriegens in the CECT and unfortunately they arrived one week before the deadline. We tried several times using a (alquilada) frozen centrifuge but 3 tries later we could not achieve electrocompetent cells. As we do not have sponsors and (alquilando) the frozen centrifuge was not cheap we stoped trying.

+

on the other side, trying V.natriegens in Printeria has been an an enormous success. We achieved the (ensablaje) of (no se cuantas partes). You can see the results in the next photo:

In order to stimulate young people to be curious about science and to promote the critical thinking on scientific foundations, we believe this educational approach needs to be changed.

Activity

To do so, we gave some talks to several high school classes, in which we talked about:
+

+

+

iGEM and SynBio as a multidisciplinary research field

We talked about the iGEM competition and the future of SynBio as a research field that can help to solve nowadays issues.
+

+

+

Bacteria: enemies or friends?

We wanted to beat the stigma against bacteria, explaining their importance and benefits, not only naturally (i.e.: they form our microbiote and they are the base of the trophic chains), but also in biotechnology (i.e.: bacteria as biofactories for medicine, industry, etc.)

+

+

+

Printeria: how it really works?

As SynBio is not only about biology, we thought it was also highly important to demonstrate the role of engineering and electronics. Thus, we decided to explain them, from an educational approch, the basis of Printeria: our software and how the digital microfluidic system allows us to control each biotech process with high accuracy. During the talk, we showed them several videos and photos to ease each explanation and to ensure studens could understand such kind of a priori complex concepts.

This collaboration was born when Ismael (Imperial College iGEM team supervisor) came to the Univertitat Politécnica de Valencia to have a meeting with Diego Orzáez one of our instructors. Taking advantage of that situation we met with him and he explained us the Imperial College project called PixCell.

The European Research Night is a wide-public event, promoted under the EU Programme Horizon 2020, whose objective is to to encourage the scientific/technical youth vocations and lay public interest to science. It involves research organizations, science museums and public organizations all around Europe.

As they are using Golden Gate grammar we thought that it could be a good opportunity to do what we could not do with Ecuador team, try their construction in Printeria and compare results handmade and Printeria made.

+

As part of this event the City of Arts and Science, one of the biggest scientific and cultural leisure complexes in Europe, organized a complete program of free access activities, including interactive experiments, scientific monologues and researchers talks. We were invited to be part of this program to present Printeria to a wide range of interested people from all ages, who listened our speech with great interest.

One of our main concerns was to demonstrate the relation between art and life sciences through the BioArt
High school talks were carried out to promote SynBio divulgation and so fighting against misinformation about genetic engineering, GMOs, etc.
As part of the European Research Night, we did an open talk about SynBio and Printeria future applications to a public from all ages
As part of the Design Factory Exhibition, we had the chance to talk and show Printeria to all our university community
