What is Kano Model

+

Kano model is used to understand the importance of functions or features to a customer [1]. It is made up of three stages:

+

+

+

First stage

+

Here you present your project to an audience and then you ask for criticisms or improvements.
+

+

+

+

Second stage

+

With those critics that we call necessities you have to make a cuestionaire (REFENCIAR EL NUESTRO) doing a paired cuestions which are ¿How do you feel if (a necessity existed in your device)? and ¿How do you feel if (that necessity did no existed in your device)?.

+

+

+

Third stage

+

Once you have all the asnwers you have to complete a series of tables to conclude if that necessity is really important or not. If it is you should include it in your design because that will increase the satisfaction of the user.

Study case

+

Taking advantage of the fact that we went to MAG (Mustang Art Gallery) in Elche, Alicante to present our project in front of students and teachers, we decided to aplly this model demanding at the end of the presentation some improvements or critics that people considered improtant. The most important ones were included in the cuestionaire and then we send it to them to fill it. Here you cand download the survey with the results:

Future generations

+

High school students are eager to know more about the world they live in. However, students rarely learn about Synthetic Biology inside classrooms. As there is a lack of hand-on STEM curricula, basic concepts such as gene, DNA and bacteria are only explained theoretically.
+

+
In order to stimulate young people to be curious about science and to promote the critical thinking on scientific foundations, we believe this educational approach needs to be changed.
+

+

Activity

+

To do so, we gave some talks to several high school classes, in which we talked about:
+

Research groups. Printeria automatizes time-consuming protocols, so it enhances the intellectual task and eases experiments reproducibility.

+

iGEM and SynBio as a multidisciplinary research field

We talked about the iGEM competition and the future of SynBio as a research field that can help to solve nowadays issues.

+

Education. With a friendly-user software, Printeria is designed to be an educational tool.

+

Bacteria: enemies or friends?

We wanted to beat the stigma against bacteria, explaining their importance and benefits, not only naturally (i.e.: they form our microbiote and they are the base of the trophic chains), but also in biotechnology (i.e.: bacteria as biofactories for medicine, industry, etc.)

Bio Art. Printeria offers a compact and friendly toolkit for the bioartist entire disposal.

+

Printeria: how it really works?

As SynBio is not only about biology, we thought it was also highly important to demonstrate the role of engineering and electronics. Thus, we decided to explain them, from an educational approch, the basis of Printeria: our software and how the digital microfluidic system allows us to control each biotech process with high accuracy. During the talk, we showed them several videos and photos to ease each explanation and to ensure studens could understand such kind of a priori complex concepts.

+

+

Thus, our main concern was how to fulfill the stakeholders demands. Following our interdisciplinary spirit, we searched for continuos input from professionals with different backgrounds, so we could ensure we were designing a useful but at the same time safe synbio device.
+

To get first-hand feedback, our human practices team conducted several interviews with each target group, so we could realize which were the real user necessities in relation to topics such as software functionalities, external design and safety measurements. We also received feedback from an open-talk with high school students, one of the most highlighted potential users. In the same way, our microfluidic system was thoughtfully developed with the advice of electronic engineering professionals from the microfluidic area.
+

However, we realized such a great amount of information needed to be classificated previously to its integration into Printeria. As a result, we decided to employ the Kano model, a theory for product development and customer satisfaction, to classify Printeria potential improvements and so be an example of this model implementation for future iGEMs teams.
+

To know how the feedback receiving was designed and how it was integrated to finally create Printeria as nowadays is, you can further read our Integrated Human page.

Printeria: introducing SynBio to the world

Printeria was born with the aim of knocking down the barriers that prevent people from coming into Synthetic Biology. However, these barriers are not only related with the high-cost technology, but also with the society lack of awareness. The lay-public do not usually know what SynBio and, when having heard about it, several misconceptions are commonly extended.

+

Thus, we decided it was completely necessary to encourage a willing atmosphere in which Printeria could be an educational to bring SynBio closer in acompact and appealing way.
+

But, how to do so?

+

While developing our project, we had the opportunity to explore the vast applications of the BioArt world. Then, we realized we had there an attractive way to introduce SynBio to the world:
+

promoting the BioArt field and so using an non-usual approach to get to the pubic. Moreover, we always conceibed Printeria as an educational toolfor the next generations raising. As a result, we decided to exemplificate Printeria possible artistic applications with artists advice and high schools students participation. On the other hand, several open-talks were given to divulge SynBio and so fight against common misinformation.

Biosafety

+
             <div style="

Biosafety measurements are completely necessary during any lab research. Moreover, considerations in relation to Printeria sterilization and biocontention measurements are essential if we want to introduce a bio-engineering device as Printeria is in non-scientific places.

Introduction

Wellcome to integrated human práctices webpage. Here we will show you what we have done in human practices, how we have done to integrate it in printeria and why we deserve this part to be a part of the gold medal.

Kano model is a famous quality design tool among engineers to include feedback in your inventions, we applied it to know what necessities were really important for users.
Several science and art experts were interviewed to improve Printeria through their vision.
Safety has influenced Printeria more than some people use to think.
