STANDARDS
1.Safety standards
Usually pose a minimal potential threat to laboratory workers and the environment.
Do not cause any diseases in healthy people.
Do not pollute the environment.
Not harmful to the experiment itself.
2.Safe lab
Labs are not usually isolated from the general buildings or the traffic, which don’t do harm to surrounding.
Do use biological safety cabinet and laminar flow cabinets.
3.Training for safety
Training on the specific procedures to handle the biomaterials.
Supervised by a trained microbiologist or scientist.
Learn some safe instructions before every time do an experiment.
As high school students, we did not have access to this level of biological experiments or biological laboratories before participating in the igem competition, so we had more systematic and professional laboratory teaching and training before conducting the research, and these courses were taught by professional teacher. After several training and pre-experimental safety guidance, the players are more skilled to master the laboratory of various types of instruments of experimental methods and safety precautions. After that, we carry out research on the subject, so there is a better activity guarantee in the safety of the whole research
4.To Implemented Standard Microbiology Practices
Our experimental personnel are not supposed to drink water, eat or other activities which probably cause experiment negligence. There is a special waste tank which has some diffidence from normal garbage can on the experiment table, reagents and drugs have their own vessels and placements. There is also a special operating space for dangerous toxic drugs, besides things whether are in the space or not will be avoided direct or in direct contact.
5. Self-protection:
We wear latex gloves and white gowns at normal innocuous reagent operations in order to make sure that the body is isolated from reagents. The laboratory is well equipped with fire extinguishing and eye washing equipment. The operations about gel electrophoresis are all process in the zone, we wear one more plastic gloves out of the latex gloves and wear a mask. Special instruments, reagents and vessels in using space are not allowed to be brought out this space.
6.Environment-protection:
The microorganism we used in the experiment (colon bacillus DH5alpha) hardly does harm to healthy individuals, and it is heterotrophic, so it will die soon without deliberately cultivating.All the experimental drugs and reagents will be replaced after experiment avoiding mistakes.Experiment personnel washing their hands with liquid soap at living area pool.
